The Route

A Baroque masterpiece overlooking Batalha square. Its iconic facade is covered in 11,000 blue-and-white azulejo tiles depicting biblical scenes and allegories of the seasons.

A hidden gem near the Sé, Santa Clara conceals a breathtaking interior behind a plain Gothic exterior — the nave is encrusted with carved gilt woodwork from floor to ceiling.

Porto's oldest and most imposing religious building. This 12th-century Romanesque fortress-cathedral dominates the skyline and marks the founding heart of the city.

Perhaps Porto's most spectacular interior. The Gothic church's interior is coated in over 100 kg of gold leaf, with an extraordinary wealth of carved Baroque decoration covering every surface.

Designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni in the 18th century, this Baroque church and its famous tower at 75 metres was the tallest structure in Portugal for over a century.

Two churches standing side-by-side, separated only by the narrowest house in Porto. The Carmo church is famous for its stunning azulejo-covered side wall depicting the founding of the Carmelite Order.

One of Porto's most photographed buildings. The exterior is entirely covered in azulejo panels depicting scenes from the lives of Saint Francis and Saint Catherine, added in the early 20th century.
